Oahu Pet-Friendly Condo Guide

With its warm climate and abundance of outdoor activities, Oahu is a haven for pets and their owners. From exploring the island's numerous pet-friendly parks and trails to relaxing days at the beach, opportunities for your pets to thrive in Hawaii are endless.

However, finding pet-friendly housing can be a challenge, especially if you plan to purchase or rent a condo or townhome. Finding a home where your pets will be welcomed and comfortable is key to their overall well-being, and yours. Although more than 60 percent of Oahu residents have pets, many condominiums either don't allow them or have restrictions on the number or size of pets allowed. So, if you have pets, or plan to one day, you'll want verify the pet-friendly status of a condo community before you sign on the dotted line.

Pets Allowed vs. Pet Friendly

When searching for a condo on Oahu, remember that buildings that allow pets are not the same as pet-friendly buildings. The latter will often allow any type of pet and have building rules and amenities to make pets comfortable. The former will allow pets, but may have rules and restrictions about pets.

Some buildings may allow pets but have restrictions on the breeds, size or number of pets allowed. For example, many apartments will not allow Pit Bulls or similar breeds, or pets over 20 pounds. Pets also may be required to use the service elevator.

Service Animals

If your pet is registered as a service animal under the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you are allowed to live with your pet in any building.
