Hawaii Kai’s marina, temperate climate, and ample housing options make it a desirable Oahu neighborhood to call home for almost any type of homebuyer – from young families to empty nesters, waterfront condo owners to mountaintop estate holders. Located just 12 miles east of downtown Honolulu, Hawaii Kai is Oahu’s first planned community. The former fishpond and wetland area was developed in the 1960s by famed industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who envisioned an idyllic suburban community. Today, Hawaii Kai is home to more than 30,000 residents, and boasts a variety of retail and dining options, first-class schools, and ample recreational activities, including surfing, hiking, snorkeling, boating, jet skiing and more.

Where is Hawaii Kai?

Hawaii Kai is close enough to downtown Honolulu via Kalanianaole Highway, yet still far enough to “get away” from the urban core. Kalanianaole Highway is basically the only way in and only way out to get to Honolulu, or “Town,” as locals call Oahu’s main city. Alternatively, Hawaii Kai residents can drive the long, scenic route around the east side of Oahu, passing through the communities of Waimanalo and Kailua to make the trek to Town via the Pali Highway.

Hawaii Kai’s East Oahu location makes it accessible to Honolulu and all its amenities, yet it’s far enough away to seem like paradise and an escape from city life. Without traffic, the trip to downtown Honolulu from Hawaii Kai might take a little under 30 minutes; however, traffic on Kalanianaole Highway can double that time.

Hawaii Kai is 18 miles (about 30 minutes) to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, 20 miles (45 minutes) to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, and 15 miles (35 minutes) to Bellows Air Force Station, making it an option for military families as well, although it is not as close to many military installations as some other Oahu neighborhoods.

  • How far is Hawaii Kai from Waikiki? With minimal traffic, it takes 25 minutes to go to Waikiki and downtown Honolulu.
  • TheBUS, Honolulu City & County’s public bus service, serves Hawaii Kai with routes 1, 22, 23, 24, 80, 80A, 80B, 82, PH6, and 235.

Hiking

An active lifestyle is typical of most Hawaii Kai residents, and the neighborhood has some of the best hikes on Oahu – from beginner to advanced trails.

  • Koko Crater Railway Trail. Park at Koko Head Park. Also incorrectly known as “Koko Head,” this trail climbs hundreds of stairs (an old railway track) to arrive at an old military bunker with 360-degree views of Koko Crater, Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the Windward coast.

The lighthouse at the top of the trail is one of the most photographed spots on Oahu and subject to many postcards. The paved path to the lighthouse is a fairly easy hike to accomplish in the morning or any time of day, making it a popular hike for beginners or families. Enjoy views of the rugged cliffs, the waving grass, neighbor islands in the distance, and the expansive ocean.
Surfing

Hawaii Kai has some stellar surf spots to enjoy Hawaii’s waves. However, both of these breaks are for more advanced surfers.

  • China Walls. Park at Koko Kai Beach Mini Park. A left break for advanced surfers only, this powerful, heavy wave wedges off a rock wall and has an incredible view.
  • Sandy’s. Park at Sandy Beach Park. An extreme shore break with rocks and strong currents. There are a variety of right and left breaks here – Gas Chambers, Middles, Cobbles, and Pipe Littles – that go off year round. This is one of the most popular body boarding spots on Oahu, but it is strictly for advanced surfers.

Spinnaker Isle

Located in the middle of Hawaii Kai toward the backside of the marina, Spinnaker Isle is comprised of six distinct neighborhoods off of Hawaii Kai Drive. Once you turn off of Hawaii Kai Drive onto Kumukahi Place, you will reach a fork in the road which will allow you to either turn left or right. Both are dead end streets with a circular turn around/cul-de-sac street end. There is no thoroughfare.

One important thing to note is that all the lots in Spinnaker Isle are marina frontage. The isle, which resembles an oddly shaped question mark (without the period at the end), has two distinct marina-front locations: exterior and interior. The exterior lots reside on the outside of the street, while the interior lots are more protected due to their interior locations.

Originally built in 1968 and 1969, many of these homes have later been totally gutted and replaced with newer homes. The original ones are typically single-story construction, while the more modern homes are two-story. Homes here do not go on the market very often. Lots are fairly large ranging from 7,000-10,000+ with the average lot size being around 8,000 sq. ft. View Spinnaker Isle Homes for Sale.

West Marina

West Marina is one of the largest neighborhoods in all of Hawaii Kai. It encompasses almost the entire waterfront portion of Hawaii Kai except for a small sliver of marina waterfront that lies between Anchorage and Mariners Cove. Most homes in West Marina were built in the early 1960s and have been remodeled over the decades. The roads are more narrow than other Hawaii Kai neighborhoods, but all residents have direct access to the vast Pacific Ocean via the marina from their backyards. Usually, lot sizes are not more than 9,000 square feet. View West Marina Homes for Sale
