On Saturday, March 20, 2021, I had the pleasure of volunteering with the Locations Foundation and Kupu for Lau Kupu Day to assist Malama Pu'uloa with restoring Kapapapuhi Point Park, in Ewa.
Along with 20 other Locations Foundation volunteers, as well as volunteers from Kupu, we planted trees in an area of the park that is being restored by Malama Pu'uloa.
One of the missions of Malama Pu'uloa is to remove invasive mangrove trees from the park and replace them with native plants. This will not only restore the park's open views, but it will also encourage other vegetation to grow.
It felt good to get our hands dirty while helping to beautify the park and learning about all of the great work being done at Kapapapuhi Point Park.
Next time you're in Ewa, be sure to visit the park and look for the newly planted trees while you bike, walk or just take in the views of Pearl Harbor. My son and I especially enjoyed the view from the Betty Nagamine Bliss Memorial Overlook. From the viewing platform above the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, keiki can look for endangered bird species, including 'alae ke'oke'o (Hawaiian coot), 'Alae 'ula (Hawaiian moorhen) and ae'o (Hawaiian stilt).
