"Backpack to School" Project: 19 Years of Locations Foundation Getting Hawaii's Keiki Ready for School!

Locations Foundation Gives 500 Backpacks with School Supplies to Keiki across Oahu

Remember first day of school butterflies? While the look and feel of returning to school may be different for keiki this year, at least one thing remains constant - the need for school supplies. Although 2020 has been a year of pivoting, the Locations Foundation remained fully committed to its annual "Backpack to School" Project. Last month, Locations Foundation volunteers came together (following health and safety protocols) to purchase, stuff and deliver 500 backpacks for keiki in our communities across Oahu.

“With the uncertainty of the upcoming school year caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to make sure keiki had necessary school supplies to support learning from any environment. No matter if keiki are headed into school or learning from home, we believe having a new backpack, filled with new school supplies, gets students in the best mindset to learn,” said Kristin Mukai, Locations Foundation President.

Each year the goal of the Locations Foundation’s “Backpack to School” Project is to support our less fortunate keiki with basic school supplies needed for learning productively in the classroom or from home. Remember how good it felt to have a new backpack, filled with new supplies? That sense of 'Aloha' is what the Locations Foundation 'ohana is all about.

Since 2001, the Locations Foundation has partnered with various local organizations to help distribute the backpacks to keiki in need. This year’s recipients were the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii (Hale Pono and Nanakuli clubhouses), Ka Pa’alana, Weed and Seed and Women in Need.
Along with their annual “Teachers Award Program,” the Locations Foundation “Backpack to School” Project is all about giving back to our local community, one keiki at a time.
