Makahiki Festival

Saturday, Nov. 4, 8 a.m.

The Makahiki Festival at Waimea Valley is a day of ceremony, celebration, friendly competition and culture, featuring  the Te Moana Nui Games, a traditional Polynesian sports competition, along with vendors, live music, and hula by local hālau. Entry to the festival is included with admission on Saturday, Nov. 4. Makahiki, which is marked by the rising of the constellation Makaliʻi, is a time of celebration in Hawaiian culture, taking place between mid-November and late winter. Historically, the four months of Makahiki signified a time of peace, relaxation, and plenty. Makahiki was the only time during the year during which early Hawaiians would play games; all other times of year being reserved for work. Makahiki is also a time to celebrate the Polynesian God Lono, the god of fertility, agriculture, and peace. Lono is celebrated by feasting and competing in sports and strength competitions.
